The Arts Catalyst

present a free symposium on Non-Human Primates as part of the

Interspecies: artists collaborating with animals exhibition

Symposium: Non-Human Primates

7-9pm Friday 2 October 2009

This free symposium brings together Sarah-Jane Vick, primatologist and psychologist; Patrick Munck, artist, videographer and collaborator with Nicolas Primat; Rachel Mayeri, artist; and chair, Rob La Frenais, curator of Interspecies.

The event focuses on the work of the late Nicolas Primat, who was one of the few artists to work directly with primatologists and with non-human primates. Primats's work stimulates new ways of thinking about our closest relatives, the higher apes, such as chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos. Patrick Munck, his collaborator and videographer, will describe some of the projects he and Primat undertook.

Sara Jane Vick, primatologist and psychologist, will outline some of the important issues in primatology today as well as describe her work on face recognition in non-human primates.

Rachel Mayeri will talk about her own future projects with retired ‘acting’ apes and talk about the similarities between human and non-human primates.

As well as chaing the discussion; Rob La Frenais will describe The Arts Catalyst's uncompleted project with Nicolas Primat to investigate creativity in chimpanzees.

Admission free, but places are limited.
